Providing an intimate experience of  history,  heritage, and home.

Experience the warmth and charm of life as it was lived by a small-town doctor.  Dr. Thomas R. Kerr, his wife Jessie, and daughter Virginia lived in their gracious home in Oakmont, a quaint town outside of Pittsburgh that provided an escape from the often harsh conditions of life in the city. The museum portrays middle-class family life in the late nineteenth century. This period was marked by the extremes of fabulous wealth and grinding poverty, which overshadowed the emerging middle class.

Featured Exhibit

"Doctor Is In"

Medical Practices during Dr. Kerr’s Professional Career, 1893 to 1931

March 14 through August, 2026

We modern Americans take for granted something as common as antibiotics or vaccines, but when Dr. Kerr was practicing (1893-1931) these medicines were not available. So what was available and how did Dr. Kerr treat his patients? These are some of the topics we will explore in our new exhibit “Doctor Is In”. We cannot wait to share with our visitors all the items we found in the house pertaining to medicine at the dawn of the 20 th century. The tour will also explore medical and scientific research of the time as these fields were developing at an astonishing pace during these years.

Always a Reason to Return!
